Authorities have detained Uşak Mayor Özkan Yalım along with 12 others as part of an ongoing investigation, in the latest move targeting municipalities run by the main opposition CHP. The development adds to a growing list of arrests, dismissals, and legal actions against opposition mayors since the 2024 local elections.
Uşak Mayor Among 13 Detained
Turkish authorities detained Uşak Mayor Özkan Yalım and 12 municipal officials under an investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Following the detentions, those held were transferred to Istanbul for further legal proceedings. Local officials confirmed that the operation targeted both senior municipal administrators and staff.
In response, supporters gathered outside Uşak Municipality, setting up tents and launching what they called a “democracy vigil.” CHP provincial chairman Celalettin Çoban said the protest would continue until all detainees are released.
Municipality Operations Continue Under Acting Leadership
After Yalım’s detention, the Uşak Governor’s Office appointed Municipal Council First Deputy Chair Tolga Pirinçci as acting mayor.
Local CHP officials emphasized that municipal services would continue uninterrupted.
“We remain at our posts. Public services will continue as before,” Çoban said.
He also defended the administration’s record, stressing transparency in tenders and municipal decision-making processes.

Part of Broader Crackdown on CHP Municipalities
The detention of Yalım is widely seen as part of a broader campaign targeting CHP-run municipalities following the party’s strong performance in the March 2024 local elections.
Since then, multiple opposition mayors have faced:
- Arrests and pre-trial detentions
- Judicial investigations and prosecution
- Dismissals and trustee (kayyum) appointments
The most prominent case remains that of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was detained and later jailed on multiple charges. His case triggered mass protests and drew international attention.
In addition:
- Nearly 20 CHP mayors have reportedly been detained or arrested over the past year
- Several municipalities have faced government-appointed trustees
- Investigations have expanded into procurement, urban planning, and municipal spending
CHP leader Özgür Özel has described the process as a “systematic political operation” aimed at weakening the opposition ahead of future elections.

Political Context: Rising Opposition, Rising Pressure
The crackdown comes as CHP has gained political momentum:
- The party emerged as the largest political force in the 2024 local elections
- It now controls a majority of major municipalities
- Polls suggest growing support for opposition figures
Critics argue that legal actions against mayors are being used to:
- Undermine opposition governance
- Disrupt potential presidential candidates
- Reassert central control over key urban administrations
Government officials, however, maintain that all investigations are based on legal grounds and deny political motivation.
Growing Public Reaction
The detentions have sparked protests and public gatherings in multiple cities.
In Uşak, demonstrators gathered outside the municipality building, voicing concerns over:
- Democratic backsliding
- Judicial independence
- Economic hardship and governance
“People are already struggling with inflation and unemployment. Now we face political uncertainty as well,” Çoban said during the vigil.
Outlook
The latest detentions signal that pressure on opposition municipalities is unlikely to ease in the near term.
With multiple investigations ongoing and political tensions rising, the legal and political battle between the government and CHP appears set to intensify in the months ahead.
