Erdoğan: Keeping Türkiye Out of Regional “Fire Pit” Is Government’s Top Priority
rte-kk
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Türkiye’s foremost priority is to keep the country out of the escalating regional conflict triggered by the war involving Iran. His remarks came after NATO intercepted a third ballistic missile fired from Iran into Turkish airspace. Ankara insists it is not a party to the war launched by the United States and Israel but warned that its patience is not unlimited. Turkish officials say the government is pursuing a dual strategy of strong security measures and active diplomacy to prevent the conflict from spreading further across the region.
Erdoğan: Türkiye Must Stay Out of the War
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Ankara’s main objective is to prevent Türkiye from being drawn into the widening regional conflict.
“Keeping our country away from this fire pit is our top priority,” Erdoğan said on Friday.
The Turkish leader warned that provocations and attempts to drag Türkiye into the war could increase as regional tensions escalate.
“We are proceeding with great caution in the face of plots, traps, and provocations aimed at dragging our country into war,” he said.
The remarks came amid heightened tensions following attacks on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the region.
NATO Intercepts Third Iranian Missile Over Türkiye
Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense said a ballistic missile fired from Iran that entered Turkish airspace was intercepted by NATO air and missile defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The interception marked the third such incident since the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran began.
According to defense officials:
-
A missile was intercepted on March 4 after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace, with debris landing in Hatay’s Dörtyol district.
-
A second missile was intercepted on March 9 over Gaziantep province, with debris falling on empty land and no casualties reported.
-
The third interception occurred Friday, again involving NATO defense assets.
Turkish authorities said Ankara has taken all necessary measures to protect its airspace.
“Türkiye is taking the necessary measures against all threats violating its airspace, as it did last night,” Erdoğan said.
Türkiye Not a Party to the War
Turkish security sources stressed that Ankara is not part of the war initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Officials said Türkiye is acting cautiously to prevent the conflict from spreading into new areas.
“Türkiye is acting with a sense of responsibility to prevent new lines of tension from forming in the region,” security sources said.
However, officials also warned that Türkiye’s restraint should not be interpreted as weakness.
“Türkiye’s patience is not unlimited,” the sources said, adding that Ankara possesses the necessary deterrent power to ensure national security.
Turkish authorities have reportedly delivered a clear message to Tehran demanding that those responsible for missile launches toward Türkiye be identified and that preventive measures be taken.
Why the Next Escalation in the Iran Conflict Could Be Between the US and Türkiye
Missiles Toward Türkiye Show Different Pattern
Security officials noted that missile launches toward Türkiye differ from attacks targeting other countries in the region.
Several Middle Eastern states—including Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Lebanon—have experienced intense missile and drone strikes since the conflict began.
However, attacks involving Türkiye show a different pattern.
Officials highlighted three key differences:
-
The intensity of attacks has been significantly lower
-
No casualties or property damage have been reported
-
All missiles were intercepted successfully by air defense systems
According to officials, the successful interceptions demonstrate the effectiveness of NATO’s integrated missile defense network protecting Türkiye’s airspace.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Turkish officials say Ankara is maintaining maximum security preparedness while keeping diplomatic channels open to prevent further escalation.
President Erdoğan has been conducting intensive diplomatic contacts with regional and international leaders.
Security sources said these diplomatic efforts are playing a crucial role in reducing tensions and preventing the war from spreading.
“The intensive leader diplomacy conducted by President Erdoğan is playing a decisive role in preventing escalation,” officials said.
They added that Türkiye continues to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue as the main path toward regional stability.
Foreign Minister Holds Talks With Qatar and Azerbaijan
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate phone calls with his counterparts from Qatar and Azerbaijan to discuss the evolving regional situation.
According to diplomatic sources, Fidan spoke with:
-
Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani
-
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov
During the conversations, the ministers also expressed solidarity with Türkiye following missile incidents targeting Turkish airspace.
Warning Against Sectarian Tensions
President Erdoğan also warned citizens against attempts to inflame sectarian or ethnic tensions inside Türkiye during the crisis.
“Our citizens must be cautious in the face of sectarian and ethnic tensions that may be provoked,” he said.
Turkish officials warned that framing the regional conflict in sectarian terms—particularly on social media—could damage both domestic social harmony and regional stability.
“Turning the tensions in the region into sectarian debates in the domestic public sphere is a dangerous trap,” security sources said.
Authorities urged the public and media to adopt a responsible and unifying language when discussing developments in the region.
Türkiye Seeks Stability While Defending Its Security
Officials say Türkiye will continue to pursue a balanced strategy of diplomacy and security measures.
While Ankara is determined not to be drawn into the conflict, it has also made clear that it will defend its territory and airspace if necessary.
“Türkiye will continue to see diplomacy and dialogue as the key to peace while ensuring its national security,” officials said.
