The Visa 2026 Financial Services Research highlights a seismic shift in how money moves in Turkey. According to the study, physical bank branches are rapidly losing their status as a necessity, with contactless payments and QR codes officially becoming the heartbeat of daily commerce. Turkey has now solidified its position as one of Europe’s most agile and advanced digital payment ecosystems.

Banking Without Borders: The Death of the Physical Branch

Digital transformation has successfully moved banking from a “location-based” chore to an “experience-based” service. One of the most significant findings of the report is that 50% of participants no longer believe that a bank needs a physical branch to be viable.

While 47% of users still value the branch for “human contact and trust,” the momentum is clearly shifting toward a hybrid model where digital tools handle the heavy lifting. Digital banking awareness has reached a staggering 98%, with users logging into their financial apps an average of five times per week.

5 Key Insights into Turkey’s 2026 Financial Ecosystem

Visa’s data paints a vivid picture of a country that has fully embraced the future of fintech:

  1. The Rise of Mobile Contactless: Android-based contactless payments have surged to 70% usage, particularly in supermarkets and cafes where speed is a priority.

  2. The “Free Service” Motivation: The primary driver for digital banking adoption is cost-free access to financial services.

  3. Crypto Awareness vs. Reality: While 95% of people are aware of cryptocurrencies, only 20% were active users in the last month, showing a cautious approach to digital assets.

  4. Demand for Consolidated Finance: 56% of consumers want “Open Banking” solutions that let them track all income and expenses on a single screen.

  5. Frequent Engagement: Turkish users are among the most active globally, engaging with digital banking platforms nearly every day.

“Turkey: The Digital Payment Star of Europe”

Samile Mümin, Visa Turkey General Manager, noted that user expectations are now crystal clear: they want speed via mobile contactless and control via digital banking.

“Users choose mobile contactless and QR for speed, and digital banking for control. As Visa, our focus is to take this dynamic ecosystem to the next phase without compromising on security.”

This rapid adaptation underscores Turkey’s role as a testing ground for fintech innovation, outpacing many Western European neighbors in adopting frictionless payment technologies.
