Court Rejects Bid to Cancel CHP’s September 21 Emergency Congress

CHP

Ankara’s Çankaya District Election Board has rejected a request to cancel the Republican People’s Party (CHP) extraordinary congress scheduled for September 21. The ruling paves the way for the party’s 22nd Extraordinary Congress to proceed as planned, despite internal disputes.

Dispute Over Party Bylaws

The controversy began when a group of CHP delegates called for an extraordinary congress in response to an ongoing absolute nullity lawsuit (mutlak butlan davası). Party officials approved the demand, setting the date for September 21.

However, one of the party’s delegates from Ankara challenged the decision, claiming the congress violated CHP’s internal bylaws. The delegate formally applied to the Çankaya District Election Board, seeking to block the congress from taking place.

District Election Board Rejects the Appeal

After reviewing the case, the Çankaya District Election Board dismissed the request, ruling that the extraordinary congress will not be canceled.

The delegate who filed the objection is now expected to appeal to the Ankara Provincial Election Board, keeping the legal dispute alive in the days leading up to the gathering.

Political Context

The extraordinary congress comes at a time of heightened tension within CHP, as debates over party leadership, governance, and strategy intensify. With the congress still on track, party members are preparing for what could be a pivotal meeting in shaping the CHP’s future direction.
