Why Are Young Turks Delaying Marriage? KONDA Poll Reveals Rising Economic and Social Barriers

marriage crisis in Turkey deepens

A recent survey conducted by KONDA in May 2025 sheds light on shifting perspectives toward marriage in Turkey, particularly among younger generations. The report reveals that an increasing number of individuals are choosing to delay or avoid marriage altogether—primarily due to economic constraints, personal priorities, and anxieties about the future.

Majority Say “It’s Still Too Early” to Marry

According to the KONDA Barometer, among those who said they do not plan to marry, the largest group—42%—said they simply felt it was too early to consider marriage. Another 34% reported that personal goals such as career or education took precedence.

Meanwhile, 31% cited worries about the future of Turkey and the world as a reason for putting marriage plans on hold. These responses point to a wider cultural and psychological shift as young people face mounting pressure in a time of global uncertainty.

Finances Still a Major Obstacle

Financial difficulties were another leading factor. 26% of respondents said they could not afford to get married, while 21% stated they had not found a suitable partner.

These findings highlight how economic insecurity—paired with a shrinking pool of potential matches—is reshaping the institution of marriage in Turkish society.

Other Notable Reasons

Although less common, other factors were still significant:

  • 3% said their partner did not want to marry

  • Another 3% blamed family disapproval

  • 2% cited health issues

  • 7% selected “Other”, indicating a range of personal, individual reasons
